About This Spot

Stepping into Portillo’s Deerfield feels like slipping into a cherished Chicago tradition where the lively hum of conversation mingles with the savory scent of freshly grilled beef and spiced hot dogs. The vibe here is casual yet bustling, inviting guests to settle in at one of the many welcoming tables or even inside the nostalgia-flavored bus seating that hints at the city's rich culinary culture. It’s a place where time slows just enough to savor familiar flavors, with the steady rhythm of orders being called out and food delivered, pairing efficiency with warmth.

Portillo’s does more than serve food — it offers a laid-back snapshot of Chicago’s street food soul. Here, the menu unfolds with comforting staples that feel like they’ve been lovingly passed down through generations rather than churned out by a chain. The iconic Italian beef sandwich arrives piled high with tender, flavorful meat and the perfect balance of sweet and spicy peppers, while the hot dogs — dressed with all the classic Chicago toppers — carry a snap of nostalgia in every bite. The atmosphere is enhanced by the soft crunch of jumbo fries and the occasional indulgence of a dense, fudgy chocolate cake slice or one of their famously inventive shakes, which add just the right touch of sweetness to round out the meal.

This walk-in, drive-thru, and takeout-friendly spot radiates a comfortable authenticity, drawing locals and visitors alike who come for the genuine taste and the familiar, unpretentious pace. Whether grabbing a quick meal to satisfy a serious craving or settling in to enjoy the friendly chatter that fills the space, Portillo’s Deerfield embodies a blend of community warmth and culinary comfort with a distinctly Chicagoan heartbeat.

PORTILLO'S has captured the unique tastes and textures of Chicago's street foods. It's an enchanting mix of Italian beef, French fried potatoes, and Chicago's original "salad-on-a-bun" hot dog. Entering Portillo's, your senses fill with intoxicating aromas. Both the meat and vegan "salad-on-a- bun" hot dogs are served in a steamed poppy seed bun, and topped with a colorful mix of yellow mustard, brilliant neon green relish, sparkling white onion, red tomato slices, fiery sports peppers, a sour light-green pickle, and celery salt. There's even a plant-based (vegan) Chicago hot dog offering the flavor, texture, and bite of the original. Chicago's Italian Beef sandwich constructed of a pile of paper thin slices of rump roast slow cooked in a rich beef broth and seasoned with Italian spices (basil, thyme and oregano). It is served on a hoagie or French roll, often topped with sweet peppers or spicy giardiniera, and melted provolone. Served either "wet" (au jus spooned over) or "dipped" (after each bite, the diner briefly dunks the sandwich into beef gravy) for an authentic, messy Chicago experience Portillo's is large, colorful restaurant decorated with historical Chicago memorabilia. (Think political.) Meals are ordered from the counter or on a surprisingly easy-to-use computer screen. Everything is ADA compliant. Restrooms are at the rear of the dining area. There's plenty of free parking.

I used to love Portillo’s but it just doesn’t taste the same anymore for some reason. It’s a Chicago staple and they still serve some of the best cakes, but the quality of everything seems not as good as it was before. I’ll still come if I’m super hungry and craving something late night but it used to be my go to place and my first pick for lunch/ dinner.

Whether you live in the Chicago area or are just visiting, Portillo's should be a must. Can never go wrong with the famed Chicago grill, always consistently good food in the ol' classic vibe. No matter what you decide to eat whether it's a Chicago dog, Italian Beef, burger, chopped salad; Portillo's does it right. Chicago style food is a way of life around here and Portillo's is easily the most iconic of them all. Always a clean dining room with plenty of dining space including outdoor seating, friendly customer service and elicious grub at still fair prices like any other location I've been to. Portillo's will always reign supreme among other Chicago style grill chains and will always remain busy. Hope for continued success & prosperity for the owner(s).

I couldn't believe we didn't have to wait in line or a long wait for our food to come out. The place is spacious, cool atmosphere, love the bus. We dine in the bus. Lol There are plenty of seats indoor and outdoor. I love the Chicago hotdogs, with everything on it. The cheese and chili are yummy, too. Portillo's dogs never disappoint.

Why review a fast food chain? Because it is good food. The go-to should be the beef. I get it dry (because I don’t like the “spongy” bread) and I get it with hot peppers. Now, if this place did a co-lab with Mauro Provisions, it would knock all competitors out of the park. I have consumed many-a-beef and this one is my favorite. Zero fat to pick out and delish to the last bite. Threw down some crinkle fries and washed it down with some fruit punch Hi-C.
